Varnashrama Dharma

"A devotee, because he is working as a shudra, he is not a shudra; neither he is a brahmana. He is already in the spiritual platform. But for management we have to do that. One can do the shudra's work nicely—let him be engaged in that way. Why he should imitate?"   [April 20, 1974 Morning walk - Hyderabad, India].

Therefore why a shudra artificially should be a brahmana? Let them, let him remain a shudra, and if he follows strictly the rules and regulation of shudra, he'll also be as good as a brahmana. The same example: Just like head is as important as my leg. It is not that because it is leg, it is less important than my head. And if you ask the head, "Do the work of a leg," it is impossible. And if you ask the leg to work as a brain, that is impossible. Let him remain brain, let him remain leg, and do your duty and you become perfect.     [Feb. 14, 1977 Mayapur, India]

Varnashram should be established (or revived) - this was one of the strong desires of Srila Prabhupada the founder of ISKCON society.  The establishment of Varnashrama would make his society more perfect, this was comment of Srila Prabhupada.  With the practice of Krsna Consciousness everything becomes perfect and this is the main focus of ISKCON.  Undoubtedly it is the institution formed by Srila Prabhupada to give everyone opportunity to perfect this human form of life by going back home back to Godhead through the process of cultivation of Krsna Consciousness.  But still Srila Prabhupada felt that establishment of Varnashram could make his society more perfect.

Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur says in his writings (in Bhaktyaloka) that a devotee can serve, advance and cultivate Krsna Consciousness in best way within the structure of Varnashram.  This means if we are perfect in our sadhana - we can serve Krsna in best way withing the structure of Varnashram.  If we are practicing devotees and desire to advance in devotional life, or we are trying to cultivate the remembrance of Krsna - all this can be done in best way with the four divisions of Varna and Ashrams.

For these reasons and also for enhancing our preaching mission, it is of great importance to establish the Varnashram as this will also attract the people who may not have interest in Krsna Consciousness and gradually give exposure and revive their interest in Krsna Consciousness.
